Ranking of Swiss Schools

There is no official and recognized ranking of Swiss hotel schools available. However there are different attempts by a wide range of institutions to produce rankings of top hotel schools in Switzerland, in Europe, in America or even in the world!

The criteria examples selected to formulate hospitality school rankings vary greatly, and in consequence the results of the rankings differ heavily. Often only a single or just a few criteria are selected. Subsequently the rankings differ one from another. There is no all-encompassing hotel school ranking, therefore it is very difficult for the customer to get reliable information out of the various and differing surveys. To make a clear and informed decision, the customer would need to know the determining factors for the ranking and what criteria the ranking is based on. Unfortunately there are schools using rankings mainly as a marketing instrument by just stating the “best of” but without differentiating the criteria.

ASEH and its academic member institutions, as well as hospitality industry partners, have serious concerns regarding these rankings, as they tend to create confusion for present and future students. Factors such as accreditation and certification standards are better indicators of Hotel Management School quality.

It is a fact that ASEH is still the only association in Switzerland that guarantees high quality standards of their member schools, all of which have to fulfil 120 quality criteria points, and all of which have to undertake re-accreditation every four years. All of the member schools have completed the accreditation procedure, and fulfilled strict membership criteria (all 120 quality criteria points have to be fulfilled). In point of fact there is no 'better' school in the association, as each one has its own particularities and all are of the highest quality.

Creating a ranking system is therefore not the aim of ASEH, because the programs vary from school to school, and we believe that customers should make their quality choice based on their personal expectations for their future career, the language of instruction, and the program offered by each ASEH member school. Students should decide what criteria are valuable to them and base their hospitality program choice on how closely each program matches their own ideas of quality.
